Michelle Mukaida Contributed  Facilitator: Computer issues

Week 12's topic was to "Identify a teacher or school that does a learning activity that makes use of a tablet device (such as iPad) in which students create audio or visual artifacts to demonstrates that learning has taken place".

Explained: "This week we read about audio and visual (video) technologies. What was not included in the chapter was a discussion on how smart phones and tables (like iPads) can support audio and visual teaching and learning. Tablets make it easy to audio or video reflection, presentation, weekly summaries, documentation, digital storytelling...".

Our group has chosen an article about an iPad pilot program at "North Shore Schools" a school based in New York. They have implemented the the iPad in there classroom which includes audio and visual lessons using iPad apps and the built in camera. In addition, students use tuner apps to tune their musical instruments, metronome app for keep in time, and Garage Band app and iMovie app for  audio/visual presentations and podcast projects. Students can even connect their connect their ipads to SMART Boards with a Apple VGA adapter and the iPad's mirroring capability. there are many more applications listed on the website.

The website is located at http://www.northshore.k12.ny.us/12Oct/distbox3_ipadupdate.html  and it is feature rich with functionality and tools for administrators, teachers, parents, and students.

Furthermore, what's great about the iPad is that it can be tailored to create lessons for many different learning styles.. For example. North Shore Schools uses the iPad's Camera for scavenger hunts where students need to take a picture of an artifact and explain why it is important to the concepts they are learning in class. Some other schools have made use of the iPad's camera also by using QR codes which are scrambles patterns, but when you take an picture of it using a QR app, it takes you to a website, video, or displays words or clues if used in a scavenger hunt. I think I can even take this further by using QR codes to produce GPS coordinate that students input into a GPS, Iphone or GPS enables iPad and incorporate Geocaching lessons on geography and math. Some schools have came up with a term called Geoconferencing where the take the concept of GPS treasure hunts and collaborate with other schools through video conferencing to lean about geography and math.

Some other iPad  ideas for Audio/Visual concepts you can incorporate in your classrooms are below that were equally interesting and discussed in our group.

A video of a student's work using the stop motion animation App called "iMotion HD". Students create tutorial videos for other students that are having trouble catching on to concepts. In a way the students take on the teacher role with their stop motion video creations.

Task_3-2 Reflection

Task_3-2 Reflection

1.    What roles did the members of your team have this week?

Task 3-2 Contributors:

Jason:Project manager: Motivational image & Quote, Created SLO #1, Set up instructions, update group members on progress, collaboration with Kaye-lani on SLO Question 1 & SLO Question 2,  help select final group SLO, filled out SLO Form.
Kaye-lani: Adviser and collaborator: Created SLO #2, PBL Scenario collaboration with Jason on SLO Question 1 & 2, feedback and advice from experience, helped select final group SLO
Johanna: Group Motivator/Encourager (Emergency Back-up specialist):
Created SLO #3, helped select final group SLO
Melanie: Editor-in-Chief (Proofreader): Created SLO #4, helped select final group SLO
Nathan: ?????  did not responded to Email, has not contributed to PBL project and  has not contributed to this week's forum. =(
Michelle: ????? Missing in Action, did not responded to Email,  has not contributed to PBL project and has not contributed to this week's forum. =(

2.    Given your role in the group this week, how did you contribute to group?

As the Project Manager for the group, I tried my best to set up the Google Docs with templates and instructional resources to help my group. In addition, I put up some motivational images and quotes to try to create an environment and mentality that we can do it and succeed!

3.    What worked well this week?

Our group brainstormed and contributed some great SLO to use for our PBL Scenario. Many of our members have busy lives with work and more then a full time student course load. Even so three members were consistently able to overcome obstacles and be depended on. As a result, this helps to develop trust and commitment and increase moral that together we can make it!

Johanna was instrumental in keeping the group together with her enthusiasm and proactive approach to helping other struggling group members by taking over their forum facilitator duties. As a result it helped spark some life into the group's morale. If she wasn't in the group I would have withdrew from this class on March 21, but knowing her from last semester that she has great work ethics and intellect, I knew she would be a great asset to the group and can be trusted to come through.

4.    What will you do differently next time?

I think we are now down to a total of  four active members that have proven their dedication and commitment to the group. I will continue to keep all our group members updated and try to accommodate their needs, but it is hard to trust and assign specific tasks knowing there is a good chance someone may not come through.

Task_3-1 Reflection

Task_3-1 Reflection

1.    What roles did the members of your team have this week?
Contributors:

Michelle-???   =( did not respond to email or link to google doc posted to forum.

Nathan-???     =( had a lot going on at the school he teaches at and informed us.  Same as above, but I found his alternate email address, which he responded, but by then we were finished.

Johanna *Visual Image Master found images for us to use (what to keep or delete/arrange placement)

Kaye-lani *PBL Scenario Idea & Benefits of  PBL,and her experience with  Kapolei’s Project Based Learning curriculum:
http://kapoleihigh.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=200446&type=d&pREC_ID=434280

Melanie Mamhot- *Editor-in-chief & Proof reader

Jason Nagata- Set up google docs, Outline template, body of letter, conclusion/closing info, update notice, monitor & document people’s contributions, email group UH email, posted document link in forum, and later tried to find the other peoples alternate email address.

2.    Given your role in the group this week, how did you contribute to group?

As Project Manager, I set up the Google document and shared it with the group and the Teacher. In addition, I created a draft outline template and contributed with the body of the letter. Kept the group updated with progress and agendas within the Google docs. Additional contribution was listed above under the contribution heading.

3.    What worked well this week?

Great ideas from Kaye-lani, Johanna found some great images to use, and Melanie helped to look over the letter and try to find typos etc... With the help of my teammate it made my job a  little easier, and saved me some time, such as searching for images and double checking my work.

4.    What will you do differently next time?

It was a rough start, I did set up early and emailed the group , but only two people responded right away. I should have used some of my group members alternate emails, because it was mentioned that my email might have been lost in the multitude of junk mail or laulima post email updates. I think I should have posted the link in the forums earlier, because the group members check the forums more often then email maybe.

Task 2 Deliverable Debriefing Questions

Task 2 Deliverable Debriefing Questions

Having completed this review of a web 2.0 tool would you use this tool in your classroom?

Yes, because I wouldn't mind teaching computer science or a robotics club in the future. Scratch programming tool helps to develops problem solving skills, and with the new Scratch 2.0 that will be released soon, it will have collaborative elements and the ability to view the code online instead of downloading peoples projects. In addition, there will be a remix feature that allows others to experiment with other peoples codes online and see the results which would enhance self-learning. We need more critical thinkers and to help our students to be able to adapt to a changing world and make it better.

Prior to this activity, how did you typically select website or tools to use?

Usually I would use google search or news feeds like lifehacker website, TED, Diggs etc... to find something to help me to be more productive or manage my life better.

Do you have any ideas, comments or feedback on improving the web 2.0 tool selection process?

I think as teachers, we will learn more  about web 2.0 tools through networking with other teachers. In addition, teachers can attend self development workshops or teach others about whats out there for others to use. Most importantly, we must try to keep up with technology to allow us to provide the best tools in order to support and engage student's learning.

Week 8's topic was to "Identify and post the website of a web 2.0 tool that you think you may use or have used to support effective learning in your classroom and outside of your classroom".

Explanation: "In this connected world there are many web 2.0 software tools available. What tools would you consider having in your tool belt to support your students in learning in your classroom or even outside of your classroom where more and more learning is taking place".

Our group wanted to share with you all a web 2.0 Administrative tool called Jupiter Grades. It helps school administrators to manage staff and student data and allows teachers to be more productive in managing their classrooms.

What's great about this software is that it is an all-in-one information management system that is scalable. The basic functions are free and additional tools are priced to fit a schools needs. Since it is web based and allows for mobile access, the  software company helps to manage the security and maintenance work of the website and data, such as backing up of data, and upgrading he software which would save the school time and money.

The website is located at http://jupitergrades.com and it is feature rich with functionality and  tools for administrators, teachers, parents, and students. This includes, seating charts, attendance, lunch count and menus, discipline logs, grade tracking, lesson plan sharing, rubric tools, newsletters (with Spanish translation), calender/events, online tests, online homework and submission, textbook tracking, and various integrated reports that can be printed out.

Check it out, you can even watch the demo video here http://jupitergrades.com/about/demo.php and as one of our group member likes to say, "It is beast and the bomb"!
